Q: How did they survive plagues and viruses pre-vaccine?
A: Adaptogens

Adaptogen is a name for herbal remedies that have been used for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. The term adaptogen was originally coined by Russian scientist Dr. Nikolai Lazarev in 1947, during the Soviet search for natural and safe remedies to increase the resistance to biological stress.”https://www.gardeningchannel.com/ultimate-list-of-adaptogens/

In the olden days, The Black Death, also known as the Pestilence, Great Subsonic Plague, the Great Plague or the Plague was avoided by some – especially in Africa. Why? It depended on your access to medical expertise, your love of mice killing cats, and your social distance from people. Unlike the Spanish Flu or Influenza Pandemic of 1918,the Plague was a bacteria not a virus and the Plague caused estimated mortality ranging from 75 to 200 million people, peaking in Europe from 1347 to 1351.(1)

In later plagues some of the lucky ones were treated by Nostradamus- Yes that one.
Nostradamus was a self-taught pharmacist aka apothecary before he gained fame as a prophet of the future.

He did unusual things like washing his hands often.
He treated people with tinctures of his own, which in the fortunate rallied the immune system to fight the infection. The timing was everything. Legends say Nostradamus's wife and child died because he was not there to treat them.

What worked?
Not colloidal silver-
CON
Unless you are really skilled in distilling in administering parts per million this approach is not guaranteed to keep you well. Colloidal silver can block bacterial and possibly viral processes and slow down the rate of illness as you fight it.PRO:It has been proven that silver colloidal solutions work best OUTSIDE the human body- like Lysol– which is why the FDA is banning Alex Jones from pushing his colloidal silver products as a cure. ring around the roses
a pocket full of posies
this rhyme came from the1347 to 1351 period when the average doctor dressed like this Note the fishing rod (wand)
What worked?
Not Vitamins
CON
It takes several months to build a good immune system so doubling up on vitamins without exercise/sleep/muscle recovery...Vitamins will not give you an immune system edge until your body is forced to use them. You store what you eat so unless a body part is stressed enough (exercise or injury) Vitamins are not going to stream to it.PRO: Starting healthy habits now that you are home and have nothing else to do other than getting fitter is a good idea.

What worked?
Zinc (3)Found in fish zinc is a metal that can be ingested daily but if you decide to up your intake Keep in mind that this Tolerable upper limit includes the zinc you get from foods and supplements. Study the chart from WebMD and consult with your doctor before adding anything because this is not a normal dose but a THERAPEUTIC DOSE.

CONYou need to keep a zinc diary and use a website/app that lets you track how much zinc you intake each day. https://careclinic.io/nutrition-log/

What did Nostradamus use?
Herbal Teas
The Renaissance was the age of spices. No one knows for sure what spices Nostradamus used https://skeptoid.com/episodes/4066 We do know that He used advanced antiseptics and recommended a diet low in fat with plenty of good exercises.
What is “ true about Nostradamus is that he was a noted and reputable plague doctor, although he admitted regretfully that he never found any cures or preventive measures that worked. “

In Modern times, one thing we know is that spices do not kill bacterial but they do boost your own immune system to attack infections.Even When a Vaccine Becomes Available Your Immune System Must RALLY In Order For The Vaccine To Work. How your immune system rallies depend on the level of germ/virus that your immune system detects. And most importantly how much time has been spent boosting the system. So you need to have a non-lazy, nay,Awake immune system in the first place, along with several months headstart.

With that caveat in mind “….Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” - (Hippocrates)

Tea – a liquid distillation of some food ingredients

CON
You can be allergic to some teas. Echinacea which is often slurped in tea form can be deadly to children and adults with allergies to flowering plant pollen especially mums, daisies marigolds and ragweed.
PRO
Does echinacea work in helping the immune system?
Yes!! In conjunction with Elderberry and in the absence of symptomsnon-allergic types can start now just watch the caffeine (which is in a lot of cold medicines!!)

As for you allergic types -How to proceed?Avoid kitchen sink teas which put 7 or 8 ingredients together in unknown amounts. It is smarter to use simpler mixes by buying your own spices and adding them to some inert tea like black or green tea.
Here is a list of spices that were available to Nostradamus @ 1521

Pepper, Cinnamon, Cloves, Nutmeg, Ginger, Saffron, Cardamom, Coriander, Cumin, Turmeric, Mace, Anise, Caraway and Mustard

Most of the spices on this list act as adaptogens- they tease the immune system to do some pushups. Western medicine until recently did not emphasize adaptogens.

PRO
Turmeric and mustard reduce inflammatory states which result when the immune system keeps producing in the area of injury. Sometimes this is detectable as swelling or soreness. Not all inflammation is bad unless it lasts too long.

https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/index is an online supplement checker that allows for research into interactions because some of these spices interfere with medications you may already take. So much of the adaptogen function is based on healthy people not taking any medications.

CON
Ginger and Anise are known to interfere with SOME heart medications so it is always good to know exactly how all your meds work. The following link explains the info sheet you get with your meds in plain English. It also lets you look up all the spices listed here; Pepper, Cinnamon, Cloves, Nutmeg, Ginger, Saffron, Cardamom, Coriander, Cumin, Turmeric, Mace, Anise, Caraway, and Mustard

The Chinese Medical Tradition differs from the Western so much that the two different approaches are often considered oppositional. The Eastern or osteopathic and the Western or allopathic approaches are not diametrically opposed. In the late 20th century the two practices started to merge in Cancer treatment.

Adaptogens grew in popularity as cancer patients wished to alter their recovery pain and grew when ex cancer survivors realized they could re-configure their immune systems on a basic level, over time.

A popular anti-cancer adaptogen is Oscilliumum

Oscillococcinum is a brand name homeopathic product manufactured by Boiron Laboratories. Which means you can buy it on Amazon. How good is it?

PRO
There is no reliable evidence that taking Oscillococcinum can prevent the flu. However, in people with flu symptoms, there is some evidence that Oscillococcinum might help people get over the flu faster, but only by 6 or 7 hours. (4)
CON
Some side effects but no idea if the side effects are from allergic reactions
https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-1080/oscillococcinum

In conclusion
If you have no underlying conditions
Bad habits make it more difficult for you to have a virus-fighting immune system
I m going to an expert- ex cancer patients know they have to revise their habits in order to be 5 or 10 years cancer-free. The approach works against viruses also. QuotingAndrea Leonard who owns CETI (5)

Conclusion 1
If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation – excess alcohol consumption can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, an increase in body fat and certain types of cancer.Alcohol affects the way health gut microbes interact with the immune system.Alcohol also disrupts the gut barrier, allowing more bacteria to pass into the blood. …Excessive drinking reduces the number and function of three important kinds of cells in your immune system–macrophages, T and C cells.

Conclusion 2
Try to minimize stress – when we’re stressed, the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens is reduced. That is why we are more susceptible to infections during stressful times. The stress hormone corticosteroid can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system.
(e.g. lowers the number of lymphocytes).

You want to give the immune system all the help it can get. Eat fish. Get some sleep.
And
Try to help out your neighbor

MORE All about the Sauce DETROIT

Jean of the Islands -All about the Sauce Part 2 (Detroit in my childhood  was short on Caribbean influences and long on Deep South cooking, and as a kid I would rather Eat than Cook (2)... Having grown up in Detroit's Northwest section at a time when it was more Jewish than Black , I remember the bakeries that sold huge loaves of slightly sugary white bread. This bread was great for Dagwood sized sandwiches. When I started high school I discovered the food joints surrounding the school even though I had no lunch privileges off campus (1) during the school day...After school I would walk until I saw a bus, so a walk down Wyoming near Curtis on my way to 7 mile  road  was a chance to sample some of the best BBQ this side of the South. Thanks to the Great Migration, families had brought up their grilling, sauce and pork fixing traditions and each spot had its own style.  This was before  the era of Anita Baker singing near Fenkell. The west side had their joints and the East side

If you say yes, red  and green sauces appear on your table .Using green salsa or red salsa  is the Mild (safe) way to go. Being authentic is using green habernero sauce (green hot chile pepper)  and the red chili in popular Sriracha. Of course you can get used to the heat and might be able to go with Wasabi which is Asian and Way Hot.
